Сега finally admitted during its Q&A session for the Q3 financial results (thanks, Nintendo Everything) that the release of Sonic Superstars alongside Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. Wonder was not an ideal decision, although it didn't mention Nintendo's flagship by name.
Sonic Superstars, which is priced higher than Super Mario Wonder on digital storefronts, received positive reviews upon launch and a solid score of 8/10 from us. However, given the critical acclaim and hype generated by Super Mario Wonder (as well as the excitement for The Super Mario Bros. Movie earlier this year), it's unsurprising that Sega's platformer failed to meet expectations.
When asked about evaluating Sonic Superstar's performance, Sega stated, "Although Sonic Superstars has been generally well-received by those who have played it, the timing of the launch coincided with competing titles in the same genre, and it has fallen short of the initial forecast. The strategic expansion of Sonic IP is progressing well, and we will continue to work to increase repeat sales of this title."
Of course, changing a locked-in release date for a major title like Sonic Superstars would require significant effort. However, one can't help but wonder if this could have been avoided.
Regarding the release of Sonic x Shadow Generations later this year, Sega defended its decision to release Sonic titles in quick succession when asked if it could harm the IP. The company stated, "The recently announced SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS is scheduled for release when the third installment of the Sonic movie, which has had consecutive hits, is scheduled for release. We are positioning it as an important title in our transmedia strategy. Within the series, we are also developing titles with diversity in genres, and we believe that continuous delivery of the appeal of IP is the key to our strategy to expand this IP."
The jury is still out on Sonic X Shadow Generations, but at least we can see the strategy behind this decision.
